Spirit of Dullness

February 3, 2021

Isaiah 6:8-10

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”

And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

9 He said, “Go and tell this people: ” ‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’ 10 Make the heart of this people calloused; make their ears dull and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.”

Spirit of Dullness

We see this scripture quoted by Jesus in Matthew and again by Stephen in the book of Acts.  It had become a spiritual condition of Israel, God’s people and I fear it has become a condition of many of God’s people in the church.  We have come to view our religion as truth and our doctrines as divine and while they are based in the truth of God’s word, as were the laws of the Israelites, the word of God had become of no effect.  Why?  Jesus said in Matthew 15:6, “…Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.”  The unfortunate thing is that those who have become the victims of religion are so often afflicted with this spirit of dullness.  They have been dumbed down to only receive the milk and the rudimentary things of God’s word.  They hear the same thing a thousand different ways, but the message never changes.  They keep going and hearing about the salvation of Jesus, but once we are saved aren’t we to grow up into Him in all things.  In order to grow you must be fed something more than milk.

The author of Hebrews makes this observation and declaration to the early Jewish Church. They were a very blessed in many ways, but he says this concerning them in Hebrews 5:11-14, “We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain because you are slow to learn. 12In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”  In other words they were spiritually dull, never excelling or going beyond the rudimentary things of the Spirit.  The author goes on to exhort the Hebrews in 6:1-3, “Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, 2instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3And God permitting, we will do so.” This is an exhortation that the church at large needs to be hearing in this hour.  We are to be no longer children tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine, but established, rooted and built up in our most holy faith.  It is time for us to quit playing church and become the Church.  The church is not a building we go to assemble, but a living, breathing organism empowered and given life by the Spirit of God within her.  It is Christ, a many membered man operating and functioning out of the headship of Jesus Christ.  When we look across Christianity as whole in this nation and much of the world it must grieve the heart of Jesus to see how He is represented in the world and the testimony of so many of His believers who are Christians in name and tradition only, but know nothing about the true Spirit of the living God.  This outward garment that the world views as the church is often a far cry from the representation of who He really is.  It is time for those who are still residing in this complacent place to awaken out of their spiritual dullness and sleep.  It is time to hear the trumpet of the Lord sounding and the declaration of His Kingdom that is resounding in the hearts of the saints that are hearing and responding to His voice.

In Revelations 3:14-23 the Lord speaks this to the angel of church of Lacodicea that could represent a great deal of our church world today, “These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. 15I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. 19Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. 20Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. 21To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.””  Listen church, can you truly hear Him!  This is the day to be as the wise virgins who purchased their oil through personal and intimate relationship with Jesus Christ.  The relationship was not built upon the traditions of men, but through coming to know Christ in intimacy and time with Him.  They are the ones who will enter in at his coming.  The others thought they knew Christ, but He didn’t know them.  Prepare your hearts, throw off your complacency and be seekers of the truth growing up and maturing in the things of the Lord.

Hebrews 11:6 declares, “But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”  Come, open your eyes, open your ears and open your heart that you may truly know Him in this day and this hour.

The Spirit of a Jackass

September 14, 2015

Jeremiah 14:6
“Wild donkeys stand on the barren heights and pant like jackals; their eyesight fails for lack of pasture.”

The Spirit of a Jackass

Oh that men would praise Him rather than sing mournful hymns and songs. Oh that men of the cloth would have restored to them spiritual vision and insight. The religious man perishes and is made like dry bones. He pursues God only with his mind and intellect while his heart is far from Him. He has not the faith to embrace and hold the things of God because he stands upon the barren heights of man’s religion and tradition. It is what he has been handed down from his fathers and it is what he has learned to embrace. Now, as a wild donkey, he stands upon the barren and desolate heights of religious intellect and the traditions of his fathers to find he like the jackal is looking for some dead thing to feed upon. His spiritual eyesight fails to see that God is so much more than the cathedrals of theology and learning. He is not only the God of the past, but of the here and now. He doesn’t know how to find and relate with God in his own present tense. His soul is lean though his head is full of knowledge. He dwells in the land of famine and feeds upon the fodder of human reasoning. He has a form of godliness, but denies the power thereof. Thus, he finds no pasture and rest for his soul, but wrestles with fears, doubts and unbelief. The product of this man is found across the landscape of religion. They have their structures, their forms, their incantation, ceremonies and holy words, but their lives are devoid of the life giving power of true relationship and fellowship with Father God. There God is kept in their holy box instead of being a living fire in their hearts.
Though the truth is spoken to them they can not hear. They will not receive for they are like the wild donkeys, stubborn and set in their ways. They, in fact, resent and despise those who live in and speak the truth, for they are the heretics of their religious box. The religion and their tradition have become their idol and indeed it is the religion and form that they worship and not God.
Jeremiah 14:10 says, “This is what the LORD says about this people: “They greatly love to wander; they do not restrain their feet. So the LORD does not accept them; he will now remember their wickedness and punish them for their sins.” The strongholds of religion will fall. Their religious walls have only served to hide the hypocrisy and sin of those who inhabit them. The Lord Almighty has judged the form and tradition of religion, because like the law of Moses it has become an instrument of death and not life, it has only condemned with judgement and fear instead of giving life, liberty and freedom. God does not dwell in edifices and structures of men, but in the living stones of His peoples lives and hearts. “Unless the Lord build the house they that labor, labor in vain.” The Lord will establish His house. 1 Peter 2:4-10 speaks the mind of God concerning His house, “As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him— 5you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6For in Scripture it says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” 7Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,
“The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone,” 8and, “A stone that causes men to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for. 9But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” This is God’s temple and this is His house that He has built through the hands of His Son, Jesus Christ.
God is calling His true people out of the former traditions and forms of men into the relationship with Him whereby you may cry “Abba Father”, Papa God. Our God is a God of relationship not of form and dead letter. He is desiring to bring you into the fellowship of His family and communion with His Holy Spirit. That relationship is not one of ceremony but of knowing Him in the intimacy of your heart and life through Christ. Wild Donkeys will not hear this word for they are stubborn and stiff-necked, determined in their own way even when it leaves them in famine and desolation, but those who have spiritual ears will hear and come out from among her to find that true and living church which isn’t in an organization, but is a living, functioning organism of His life, love and fellowship. This is the word of the Lord to His people this day.

Odd Little Christmas Tree

October 11, 2012

Isaiah 53:3
He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Odd Little Christmas Tree

As I closed my eyes to meditate on what to write I saw a Christmas tree lot full of trees. The lot was a sea of dark green trees, six to eight feet tall, but in the front was a little, maybe four foot tree that was bright, light green. While it stood out from all of the other trees, it wasn’t what the majority of people would be shopping for. Every now and then I would catch a glimpse of an aura around this tree that was maybe twenty feet high and much larger around. This was a special tree, unlike the others, not nearly as impressive in the natural, but what it carried, made it the tree to really be desired and purchased. What it carried was not the appearance of Christmas, but the true spirit of it. It was not about a season when men summon up the spirit of giving and expectation. It was about a tree that carried that spirit through every season of the year. It was the Spirit of God that defined this little tree and though it didn’t appear to be anything in the natural eye, when you saw it by the Spirit, its stature and glory far exceeded all around it.
That little tree may represent you today. You are not seen as anything of importance in the world. The world may hardly notice you and if it does it may be to ridicule you and mock you because you don’t look and act like everyone around you. You may be in the same lot with all of the other trees, but you are unique and different.
The other trees are Christmas trees, grown and cut uniformly for the tradition of the season. You are not for the tradition or the season; you don’t just carry the imitation of Christ, you carry the Spirit and identity of His life within you. You will not die and whither in a month, because through the Spirit in you, you abide in the Vine and draw your life from Him. You are unique and special, but not in a worldly kind of way. You were cut and placed in the lot to bring new light, meaning and understanding to the traditional ways around you. You were meant to stand apart, because in that contrast some will see the real from the facade and fake. You are here to make a difference. Don’t allow what others say or think determine your value or your worth. That has been determined by the Father and you far beyond earthly value or worth because what you carry within you is without measure and price. It is priceless. Be who God is calling you to be, even if that doesn’t look like every other tree in the lot. You are here to make a difference and blessed are the people that choose you to adorn their home and their lives. Be encouraged, what some may reject, others will cherish. Be the light and the true Spirit of Christ in the earth for all seasons.

Blessings,
