Acts 14: 1-3
At Iconium Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue. There they spoke so effectively that a great number of Jews and Gentiles believed. 2But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers. 3So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to do miraculous signs and wonders.

That Which Fills You, Spills Out of You

God hasn’t commissioned all of us to be apostles and prophets, be we all do have a mandate to share the Lord. While most of us will agree upon the commission that was given to the believers in Mark 16:15, “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature”, many of us don’t feel qualified or comfortable sharing the Lord with others. How is it God would have us to share Him when preaching and teaching may be so far from who we are? What does this word preach mean? The word “preach” in the Greek here is kēryssō. It means, “to be a herald, to officiate as a herald, to proclaim after the manner of a herald, always with the suggestion of formality, gravity and an authority, which must be listened to and obeyed. To publish, proclaim openly: something which has been done.”
A herald is a messenger making a public proclamation. Some of us may say, I don’t feel comfortable or knowledgeable about talking about the Lord. That is something we need to work on getting over. The best witness is the one who is filled with the Spirit of God. Why are they filled with the Spirit of God? Most likely they are filled because they spend a good deal of time in His presence. They feed upon the Word, they are worshippers who spend time in His presence and they are intercessors who stand in the gap for others.
Why is it we don’t have any trouble talking sports, TV programs or who has the best bargains? We easily talk and converse about the subjects that we are most saturated in. If we are to more easily converse and share the message of the Lord of glory with others what is going to give us the comfort, the gravity and the authority to share that message more than saturating ourselves in Him?
The Word says, ‘that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.’ What are we filling our mind and heart with? If it is the things of God, then it should be spiritual things that flow freely from our conversations. We should easily acknowledge God’s working in our lives even in normal conversation. Even when we are not speaking verbally we are communicating non-verbally with our actions and attitudes. Paul declares in 2 Corinthians 3:2-3, “You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everybody. 3You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.”
Some have taken this commission to preach the gospel of the kingdom as being ‘in your face’, dogmatic, judgmental and often rude. That attitude probably drives more people away from Christ than it ever draws to Him. All we need do is look at our example Jesus, to see the kingdom of God operating out of Him with love and humility, and yet with authority and confidence.
If we would be the epistles of Christ, read of all men, then what are our life and our words communicating to the world around us? That, which fills you up, will spill over in all you do and say.

Raise the Standard

October 23, 2012

Matthew 5:14-16
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

Raise the Standard

Raise up a standard, the stakes are high. Set your heart upon me and don’t allow it to be moved. Praise Me in all things and acknowledge Me in all that you do. You are a separated people; a people of My possession, a holy temple and a royal priesthood.
Takes your eyes off of the earthly mess and only upon Me let them rest. I am the sovereign One. Mine is the light from the sunset to the rising sun. In the darkness of this present age, I am your guide that lights your way.
Come now you who have broke amends, who have not lived up to the promises and vows that you made. Know that in your strength you often fail, but in My strength you can prevail. Take hold of My hand and I will lift you up, but also be willing to drink from My cup.
I stand with you when you can’t see and even when you wonder what has become of Me.
I am not always there to bail you out, but to exercise your faith without fear and doubt. It is an overcoming people that I will raise up. They have known My blessings, but have also drank from suffering’s cup.
Rise up My people. My people rise up. You are the light that illumines this darkened land, that brings the water of truth to its dust and sand. You are My rain that refreshes the earth, washing from it fear and gloom, death and dearth. You bring hope, because of what you have seen. You know of the blood that has washed you clean. Carry My light to each nation’s shore. Carry the truth to your neighbor’s door. People be the light of My glorious presence. Carry My love, My life and My essence.

2 Timothy 4:2
Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

The Light that Draws Men out of Darkness

Many of us are missing our importance in the economy of God. We are often complacent with the fact that we have found Jesus and that we are saved. We neglect the greater calling that we have to be a light in our world. Thousands of souls pass by us on their way to hell and what are we doing to make a difference. We could stand out on the street corner with our Bibles and cry out to people to repent and if that is what God has called you to do then you should do it. The majority of us live average lives, doing ordinary things that everyone else does. God has placed His lights all through the darkness, but if they never shine before men, how will people find their way?
I’ll never forget when I was in college and I went to a function at a church. As I was leaving I ran into a girl that I grew up with and used hang around with in the neighborhood. We spoke briefly and she had become a Christian, but she asked me a heartbreaking question, “Why didn’t you ever tell me about Jesus?” How many people on their way to hell today would ask us that question today, “Why didn’t you ever tell me about Jesus?”
On the other hand, I have seen people and friends with which we have shared Christ come to Him and have grown into wonderful Christian men and women. Our lives are here to make a difference in our world. God forgive me when I am so busy with me that I am willing to allow others to miss You because I didn’t represent you. What kind of ambassador doesn’t represent his country and his king? 2 Corinthians 5:20 says, “Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech [you] by us: we pray [you] in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.”
We who are in Christ have the knowledge and understanding of salvation. We may not be experts or have all of the answers, but we do have “The Answer”, and the responsibility to share Him with as many as he would give us opportunity too. Sharing Christ doesn’t have to be hard. It starts by just sharing His love, His concern and meeting people where they are. It is not about trying to start out convincing them why their beliefs or their ways are wrong.
I once was going to start telling a young man I used to work with all of the faults of his theology and the Lord spoke in my heart, “Just speak the truth, the truth will set him free.” So many people that we come into contact with have needs and are hurting in one way or another, but they put on the veneer that everything is just fine like we all tend to do. Start breaking through that surface veneer in people and find out who they are. You and I are the Christ in the earth and that puts the awesome responsibility on us to allow His light, His love and His life to flow through us.
As you go through your day look for the opportunities that God places before you for ministry. Be sensitive to the Holy Spirit so that He may use you and speak through you. Be that light that draws men out of darkness and into the kingdom of God.
