Sown in Babylon

Zechariah 4:8-11

Then the word of the LORD came to me: 9 “The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; his hands will also complete it. Then you will know that the LORD Almighty has sent me to you.

10 “Who despises the day of small things? Men will rejoice when they see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel.

“(These seven are the eyes of the LORD, which range throughout the earth.)”

Sown in Babylon

Zerubbabel means “one sown in Babylon”. He was the grandson of king Jehoiachin and leader of the first group of returning exiles from Babylon.  Today Zerubbabel represents the leadership of those God has brought out of the world and religious system.  That is where we have been sown, in Babylon.  Many of us have grown up in the religious system.  It has truth and light in a measure, but it is much like Paul describes Israel in Romans 10:2-4.  “For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. 4Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.”

Even though the New Testament church was birthed out of Babylon, Babylon has again filled much our religious thinking and ideology.  It is that which is formed by man being ignorant of the righteousness of God and seeking to establish his own.  We still use the word of God, but we do it our way and not always His way.  The truth is that there are varying degrees of Babylon in the church world today, just as there are varying degree of Babylon still in our own hearts and lives.  What God is doing is raising us up in the knowledge of His righteousness, so that we might forsake and come out of our own.  We are not established by our righteousness, but by His righteousness, which He has imparted to us through Christ Jesus.  God is revealing His truth in a Zerubbabel people to lay again the foundations of the true temple of God, which we are.  There is a plumb line in his hand that is checking and verifying what is the truth of God’s Word.  This plumb line is the seven who are the eyes of the Lord.  Revelations 5: 6 tells us about these seven eyes.  “And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. That is the truth that God is establishing in His called out ones.  The truth that Christ is that plumb line within us that establishes us in His way and in His righteousness.

Now Babylon is a comfortable place.  Many of us have become quite settled and comfortable there.  It is the status quo, the way we have always known things to be.  There we go about our commerce and live our daily lives under the economy of Babylon.  It is the world and religious system in all its glory.  There are remnants of people that are not content to remain in Babylon, as comfortable as it may be.  They know in their heart that this is not their home and so they have come out of Babylon even though many of them were sown there.  They are like those of faith in Hebrews 11:13-16, “All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. 14People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.”  The Zerubbabel of our generation is again establishing the foundation of God’s temple within our lives.  We have become a called out people that labor together by the Spirit to establish again a true place of worship in Spirit and in Truth.

It is not about one group of people saying they are right and everyone else is wrong, it is simply that there are going to be those who are the first exiles to come out of Babylon and return to the Promise land and their inheritance.  There they will reestablish what man and tradition has destroyed and corrupted.  It will be as Haggai 2:6-9 declares, “This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. 7 I will shake all nations, and the desired of all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,’ says the LORD Almighty. 8 ‘The silver is mine and the gold is mine,’ declares the LORD Almighty. 9 ‘The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ says the LORD Almighty. ‘And in this place I will grant peace,’ declares the LORD Almighty.”
